Dental assistant radiography rules differ by state. Texas requires Registered Dental Assistant status plus the RDA x-ray certification, Pennsylvania requires the DANB Radiation Health and Safety exam, Florida requires a board-approved program or a state radiographer certificate after three months of supervised training and a course, and California requires approved radiation safety coursework for its RDA license.
An assistant who exposed radiographs every day in one state may not be allowed to touch the x-ray unit in the next until a state credential issues. Radiography is regulated separately from most other assistant duties in many states, through a certificate, an exam, a course or a registered assistant status, and the requirements rarely line up across state lines. For a practice hiring from out of state, or a DSO moving staff, that is a scheduling problem worth solving before the first shift.
What does Texas require?
According to DANB's Texas chart (updated May 4, 2026), "to legally operate dental x-ray equipment and perform dental radiographic procedures in Texas, one must be a Registered Dental Assistant and apply for the Registered Dental Assistant X-Ray Certification." RDA requirements include a high school diploma or GED, hands-on BLS, the board's mandatory course on positioning and exposing x-rays and infection control (or DANB's CDA certification), the TSBDE Jurisprudence Assessment within one year, a human trafficking prevention course, and fingerprints. An RDA may expose radiographs under general supervision.
There is a training allowance: an assistant is not considered to be making x-rays when doing so only in the course of training and always under the employer dentist's direct supervision, but on-the-job training of that kind is limited to one year.
Why does Pennsylvania point to a DANB exam?
DANB's Pennsylvania chart (updated July 16, 2026) says auxiliary personnel, other than dental hygienists and public health dental hygiene practitioners, "must pass the national DANB Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam" to operate dental x-ray equipment under a dentist's direct supervision. Both the assistant and the dentist should keep evidence of the passing result. Assistants who qualified before December 12, 2009 by passing the former Pennsylvania-specific exam should keep that evidence instead. See Pennsylvania dental licensing.
How does Florida certify dental radiographers?
Florida's statute lets a dentist "authorize or direct a dental assistant to operate" x-ray equipment and expose films under the dentist's direction and supervision, under board rules that ensure the assistant "is competent by reason of training and experience" (Fla. Stat. § 466.017(7)). DANB's Florida chart (updated June 16, 2026) describes what that means in practice. An assistant must either graduate from a Florida board-approved dental assisting school or program, or be certified as a dental radiographer by the Florida Department of Health. Certification requires at least three months of continuous on-the-job training in positioning sensors and positioning and exposing radiographic images under a Florida dentist's direct supervision, completion of a board-approved radiology course within 12 months after that training, and an application to the Department.
Where does California put radiation safety?
California builds radiation safety into licensure. The Dental Board's Registered Dental Assistant license requires board-approved courses in radiation safety, coronal polishing, pit and fissure sealants, infection control and the California Dental Practice Act, plus BLS, fingerprints and the RDA Combined Written and Law and Ethics exam. Board-approved radiation safety course providers are listed on the board's site. For hygienists educated outside California, the Dental Hygiene Board requires certification of an ADA radiation safety program, completed by the program director with a seal or stamp.
Is the DANB RHS exam accepted everywhere?
No single radiography credential works in every state. Pennsylvania names the DANB RHS exam; Texas accepts DANB's CDA certification in place of its own mandatory course for RDA eligibility but still requires its RDA x-ray certification; Florida's chart does not list DANB exams as a radiography route. DANB itself says its charts are informational and "not intended as a legal opinion regarding dental practice in any state," and advises contacting the state board to verify.
Which documents should an assistant bring to a new job?
- The original radiography certificate, exam result or course certificate, and the issuing state.
- Proof of any registered or certified assistant status.
- Current BLS.
- Records of on-the-job radiography training, with dates and supervising dentist, if the new state counts training time.
- The state's own application, if the state issues its own radiography certificate.
Can we help practices and DSOs?
Our Dental Assistant & EFDA Registration service is $149 per person and covers radiography credentials. We identify what the state requires for x-ray duties, compare it to the assistant's existing training, line up courses or exams to fill the gap, coordinate fingerprints and track the application. The assistant completes, signs and submits the application and takes any exam personally. See EFDA and assistant registrations for the other duties states regulate, and license and permit compliance for DSOs for keeping a roster current.
Common questions
- Can a dental assistant take x-rays without a certificate?
- It depends on the state. Texas allows radiography as part of on-the-job training under direct supervision for up to one year, but otherwise requires RDA status and the RDA x-ray certification. Other states have their own rules.
- Is the DANB RHS exam required in every state?
- No. Pennsylvania requires it for assistants taking x-rays, but other states use their own courses, certificates or registered assistant status.
- How does a Florida assistant become a certified radiographer?
- Through three months of continuous on-the-job radiography training under a Florida dentist's direct supervision, a board-approved radiology course within 12 months, and an application to the Department of Health, unless the assistant graduated from a board-approved program.
- Does my x-ray certificate from another state transfer?
- Usually not automatically. Check what the new state requires and whether your training or exam meets it.
